Trapani Misteri Procession - Sicily at Easter Photography Tour: click here to book through our partners Light and Land!

Fully booked

We will start the course on Maundy Thursday with an initial briefing about what to expect, what to look for and many tips and sugestions about how to get the best images. We will then travel to Marsala, close to Trapani, to witness the Via Crucis Vivente, the Living Way of the Cross. This tradition dates back to the 16th century: 6 different groups will re-enact different stages of the Via Crucis, while thousands of visitors attend the event, creating an emotional atmosphere with the many devotees that will give us great opportunities to create meaningful imagery.

On Good Friday we will start early in the morning documenting the preparations for The Processione dei Misteri di Trapani, which has been performed for over 3 centuries and retells the passion of the Christ through the most elaborate and heavy floats being paraded on men’s shoulders from the church and through the streets of Trapani. The procession starts in the early afternoon and goes on for over sixteen hours: we will follow them throughout the day until nightfall. The whole event is very intense: the immense effort under which the men carry the floats is clearly expressed in their faces.

The Misteri Easter procession has become an inspiration for many photographers, including Mark Seymour, the National Geographic photographer with which I co-lead these photography tours. You will benefit from both Mark’s and Flavio’s experience: our insight into this event will provide you with a very high quality training experience and an incredible opportunity to start building your own street and documentary photography portfolio.

On Easter Sunday, at dawn, we will be visiting the Saline di Trapani, the town’s Salt Pans, one of Europe’s oldest salt marshes. The truly unique landscape, where you can still see some of the windmills that were used to drain the water from the basins, will make for wonderful landscape images.

This photography tour will give you a great opportunity for capturing poignant images of this traditional Sicilian Easter celebration.
